About Counselling |
Counselling, also referred to as psychotherapy or simply therapy, is the process of meeting with a counsellor to address problematic thoughts, feelings, behaviours and physical sensations (somatic responses) that are impacting your well-being. Through counselling, you can change your experience yourself in relationships with others and with yourself by resolving painful experiences and feelings, improving interpersonal skills and learning new ways of thinking and processing emotion. Clients often report feeling lighter, having a more hopeful outlook, less unpleasant or distressing feelings or thoughts, improved self-confidence and better interactions with others as a result of pursuing counselling.
Although no two experiences of counselling will be the same, you can expect to be an active participant in your therapeutic journey with your counsellor, and that the relationship will be a healing interaction in and of itself. For this reason, it is important that you connect well with whomever you choose as a counsellor. They will be someone who supports you, listens attentively, models a healthy and positive relationship experience, gives you appropriate feedback, and follows important ethical guidelines. Confidentiality is a crucial piece of effective therapy, and a cornerstone of ethical practice. It is a way to provide safety and containment for you as the client. There are very few reasons that your counsellor would have to disclose something you shared with them to a third party - namely if you share intent to harm yourself or someone else, if you disclose any abuse or neglect of a vulnerable person, and lastly if your records are subpoenaed by a judge. My Approach |
With a therapeutic approach grounded in the person-centred or humanistic perspective, I strive to create a safe, non-judgmental space for my clients to explore their feelings and experience. I draw from cognitive-behavioural, narrative, DBT and Gestalt techniques - creating a personalized approach for each of my clients. However I recognize that counselling is not, and cannot, be a one-size fits all approach and therefore will draw from various perspectives to offer appropriate strategies and interventions for each unique client.
I am presently a Certified Canadian Counsellor with CCPA (Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association) and a Registered Clinical Counsellor with BCACC (BC Association of Clinical Counsellors). I am committed to continually furthering my education and understanding of mental health and relational experience through workshops, conferences and continued training opportunities. |
